Comfortable Rooms, Winter and Summer

Auckland houses are good at being cold in winter and hot in summer, often in the same rooms. A heat pump fixes both: it heats in the cold months, cools and dehumidifies in the warm ones, and does it more cheaply to run than a plug-in heater. The difference between a heat pump that transforms a room and one that disappoints is almost always the sizing and the placement, and that is where we start.

What We Install

  • Wall-mounted high-wall units for living rooms, bedrooms and offices - the most common and the most cost-effective.
  • Floor-mounted units where a wall unit will not fit or where the heat needs to be low in the room.
  • Multi-room systems - several indoor units running from one outdoor unit, for a whole floor or a whole house.
  • Ducted systems for new builds and larger homes, with the air delivered through ceiling vents and nothing on the walls.
  • Commercial units for shops, offices and hospitality.

Why an Electrician Should Install It

A heat pump needs its own protected circuit from the switchboard, an isolating switch at the outdoor unit, and, in a lot of older Auckland homes, a switchboard that can actually take another circuit. We do all of that as part of the same job - and if the board is full or has no RCD protection, we tell you before we start rather than leaving you with a heat pump on a board that should have been upgraded. See switchboard upgrades for what that involves.

Getting the Size and the Position Right

Too small and it runs flat out and never gets there; too large and it short-cycles and costs more than it should. We size the unit to the room - its floor area, ceiling height, insulation, windows and which way it faces - and we position the indoor unit so the air goes where you sit, not at the ceiling or straight out the door. The outdoor unit goes where it can breathe, drains properly, and does not sit under the bedroom window.

Going All-Electric

If you heat with gas today, a heat pump is the natural replacement and part of getting the gas off the property altogether - something we can do alongside solar and an all-electric conversion, or on its own.

Which Room Is the Problem?

Tell us which rooms are too cold or too hot and roughly how big they are, and we will come out, look at the house and recommend the right unit and where it should go.

Heat Pump Questions

How long does a heat pump installation take?

A single high-wall unit with a straightforward run to the outdoor unit is usually done in a day, including the electrical circuit. Multi-room and ducted systems take longer, and we will give you a timeframe with the quote.

Does a heat pump need its own circuit?

Yes. A heat pump runs on a dedicated circuit from the switchboard with its own protection and an isolator at the outdoor unit. That is part of every installation we do, and it is why the electrician and the installer being the same person matters.

Can a heat pump cool as well as heat?

Yes. Every unit we install is a reverse-cycle heat pump: heating in winter, cooling and dehumidifying in summer. For a lot of Auckland homes the summer side is the one people end up using most.

Do I need a consent for a heat pump?

For a standard installation on a house you own, generally not. Apartments and body-corporate properties usually need the body corporate's approval for the outdoor unit, and there can be rules about where it goes. We will tell you what applies to your property.
